応用英吾I-2A Reading: And the winner is...

Well everyone, we have a winner. A couple of weeks ago, I asked you to write original stories based on your favourite characters in The Inverted Eagle. Both Adam Gray and Marcos Benevides, the authors of your textbook, have read your stories and selected a winner, and the winner is...Shin!
Here's what Mr. Gray said about Shin and his story:

"(Shin) had a good command of English, and in addition, the story about Miguel wanting to join an NPO and go to India seems very realistic based on the characters. I like the end, where he flashes five years forward and Miguel and Allison have two kids and she is there at the airport to see him off."

Mr. Gray also liked Hiroaki S's story very much. He said:

"Honorable mention to #10 (Hiroaki S), whose story made me laugh out loud. Kevin in flight school! Great idea."

You can read Shin's story and Hiroaki S's story below. I have corrected the grammar and vocabulary usage errors.

Shin's Story

It had been many months since the case of the Inverted Eagle had been solved, and with their parent's permission, Miguel and Allison were together and in love with each other. Miguel was very busy because of his studies to be a doctor, but he and Allison had a date once a month, eating lunch, going to a movie or just talking late at night. Even a common date like that made Miguel happy.
One day in the library in Georgetown University, Miguel was distressed. He didn't want to be an ordinary doctor but a member of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). MSF is an NPO and a doctor who belongs to MSF treats the poor all over the world. Therefore if Miguel became a member of MSF, he couldn't be with Allison, so he couldn't make a decision. As time passed, his head was full of these worries, and one night in autumn, he called Allison.
 "Hi, Allison. How are you?"
"Ah, the temperature has begun to drop rather low here these days, but I'm OK. How about you, Miguel? How are your studies going? Well?"
"Yes, they are going well. I'm trying hard, but, uh...."
He kept silent a little time. She sensed that something was strange at once, and broke the silence earlier than Miguel.
"If you're keeping something from me, tell me everything without worries. It's all right, Miguel."
Hearing this, Miguel felt that he'd been released from pain completely. Then he decided to tell the truth and....
After five years, Miguel is at an airport to fly to India as an  MSF doctor. Allison and two babies that look like Miguel are there to see him off.

Hiroaki S's story

Two months after his mother was arrested, Kevin got a job working in a convenience store. He was working at his part time job when a robbery happened. He captured the robbers. Ellie, by chance, walked by. She praised him and he got a big award from the police. He was in the paper and after that he was on TV. After that, he had girlfriends and enrolled in a flight school. Three years later he became a pilot and he flew all over the world. After, he lived in Tahiti. He married and had two children and he whiled away the rest of his life.

You can read the original versions of Shin and Hiroaki S's stories here: http://www.box.net/shared/2loey3coaka0xn1otk21

Please leave a comment. Let us know what you think of these stories and also tell us what you think of this project.

Bangkok skyline
There are some similarities and some differences between Bangkok and Montreal. On the one hand, both cities are built on rivers. Montreal is built on the St. Lawrence River, and Bangkok is built on the Chao Phraya River. Both Montreal and Bangkok have great food. Montreal has some of the best French restaurants in the world. Bangkok has many kinds of delicious curry. Both cities are business centres. Montreal is the business centre of the province of Quebec, and it used to be the business centre of Canada until the 1970s. Bangkok is the business centre of Thailand.

On the other hand Montreal and Bangkok are very different too. Bangkok has a larger population than Montreal. Bangkok also has more pollution. It's much dirtier than Montreal. Bangkok is also much hotter than Montreal. There is more rain in Bangkok than Montreal too. As you can see, in some ways Montreal and Bangkok are similar, but in other ways they are very different.

Port of Montreal

応用英吾I-2A 2011Chapter 3 Review

Hi everyone! Today we are going to review Chapter 3.
Illustration by Yuji Tachikawa. CC V1.0 Some rights reserved
First, let's review some vocabulary. Click this link: Inverted Eagle Chapter 3 Vocabulary.

Now let's read a great summary of Chapter 3 by Martina R., a student in Stuttgart, Germany:
Chapter 3 – The Hospital

The first lie: Judith told Ellie that she lied concerning the combination of the wall safe, she gave the numbers to Kevin. Because of her age, Judith forgot, that she also gave the combination to Miguel. After this, Ellie wanted to hear the whole story. Judith started to tell the story which had begun a month ago with the purchase of a beautiful stamp.

At the end of the conversation between Ellie and Judith Reed, Yokota, a colleague of Ellie, and Kevin entered the room. Ellie saw Kevin and she accused him of lying to her.

The next steps: Elle checked the stories of the involved people and wanted to search the house from the top to bottom.

After that, Ellie drove to the hospital where Evan and Nancy Reed were staying. Nancy was sleeping  and Even was telephoning someone with his cell phone. Ellie stopped in front of the door and tried to understand the call between Evan and the other person. The words (which) she heard were “Brian … investors …. excited about the project – to get money together”. Some / a few seconds after the  call, Ellie went into the room and introduced herself to the Reeds. Then she told the Reeds a part of her investigation. It was surprising, that Evan accused his son of committing the robbery, because the Reeds wanted that Kevin tried to find a job and they had informed him that they were stopping his monthly allowance. Later, Ellie asked the Reeds to describe the occurrences which happened last night separately?

Class Rules 2011

Well, another academic year has begun. Every year I negotiate the class rules with some of my classes. This year some of the rules are very interesting.

Some of my favourite rules for the students are:

  • We should make eye contact with each other
  • We shouldn't be shy
  • We should love Michael
  • We must always maintain a passionate attitude
  • We should laugh at the teacher's jokes
  • We should take pride in the things we do
I was especially impressed that the students seemed to understand my explanation about eye contact and why it was important. I was also very happy to know that they wanted to take pride in the things they do. I think that is very important. Finally, I hope it is easy for them to laugh at my jokes.

Some of my favourite rules for me are:
  • Our teacher must love us.
  • Our teacher must get in shape
  • Our teacher shouldn't lose weight
  • Our teacher should tell a joke every lesson
  • Our teacher should change his alarm sound
  • Our teacher must finish this class 3 minutes early
  • Our teacher should try to make explanations interesting
Many of the rules for me made me laugh. There was much laughter in all these first classes. I hope that there is always a lot of laughter in our classes. I think laughter is important.

I hope you'll leave a comment or a question.
Cheers!!
