Even More Pronuciation Practice: Hard and Soft "th", "l" and "r"

In American Headway 2 Unit 10 we have learned a new word, "through". "Through" has two difficult sounds.

Here's a funny cartoon showing how to pronounce "th". This cartoon was originally posted by an English teacher called Rafael de Carvalho Pullen Parente on his blog, Teacher Rafael.


Now, here are two videos to help you pronounce "through". The "th" sound in "through" is the soft "th" (/θ/) sound. The hard "th" (/ð/) sound is the "th" sound in "this".
These videos were made by an English teacher and soccer coach from Glasgow, Scotland called Brian Gallagher. He has a unique school in Japan called Fair Play Soccer School. Students at Fair Play Soccer School learn English and Soccer.
Since Mr. Gallagher is Scottish, his accent is a little difference from mine. However, it's close enough.

Watch the videos. Look at the speaker's mouth. Use a mirror and practice the pronunciation of "th", "l" and "r".

Great video by a Great Toronto Band

This is a video for a song called "Out of My House, Roach" by The Shuffle Demons. The Shuffle Demons were my favourite Canadian band when I was a university student.

The Shuffle Demons started out playing on the streets of Toronto. Unlike the bands playing outside Shinjuku station in Tokyo, the Shuffle Demons had to be careful of the police because playing music on the street in Toronto is illegal. Two members of the Shuffle Demons, Richard Underhill and Mike Murley appeared on Jelly Roll Jazz, my radio programme on CJAM-Fm. Toyo Gakuen University Freshman English 4 - Speaking Semester 1 2008 Final Exam Study Guide

The semester is almost over. Wow! Time flies. The final exam schedule is:
K5 - Wednesday, the 9th of July 2008, 2nd period (10:40 - 11:30)
K6 - Friday, the 11th of July 2008, 3rd period (1:00 - 2:00)
K7 - Monday, the 14th of July 2008, 2nd period (10:40 - 11:30)

If you are late DO NOT ENTER THE CLASSROOM! Go to the English Lounge. Students who arrive 30 minutes late will not be able to take the final exam.

The final exam has two parts. Part 1 is a roleplay about asking for directions and giving directions.

You can prepare for Part 1 by watching a video about giving directions from Real English.com.

Part 2 is a roleplay. You will do one of the roleplays below:
A. On the telephone - Taking and leaving a message. You can prepare for this by listening to "Phone Message" on Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab.



B. In a restaurant - Ordering and Taking an order. You can prepare for this by listening to "Heavenly Pies Restaurant". This is also on Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab.

FE2-Reading Semester 2 Lesson 1

Welcome back! I hope you had a great summer holiday, and I hope you read a lot of great books. I think we are really going to enjoy reading together again this semester.

Carnival in Trinidad, Brazil and New Orleans

Carnivals are in full swing in many countries around the world now. The most famous carnivals are in Brazil, Trinidad, and New Orleans. The carnival in New Orleans is called "Mardi Gras". Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday. It is usually the last day of a carnival. Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. During Lent Catholics fast. The carnival is their opportunity to eat delicious food, sing and dance before they have to make their Lenten sacrifices. Fat Tuesday is called Pancake Tuesday in Canada because we eat pancakes on this day.
